Hello,

I am struggling to fill in your categories and I do not have a serial number.  I have tried to contribute but I am not a user of social media and have no wish to start.

This clock came out of a Debenhams office in London.  It has as a delightful copper surround but it looks to me as if someone has had a go at replacing the motor which lives inside a can at the back.  It works fitfully and would appreciate if it could return to operating.

  1. Hello Jeremy

You’re right that someone has altered the clock movement. It looks like they have installed a whole new version, that is not originally Gents. You can tell this by the style of the clock hands, they do not match the the style of Gents hands, nor does the movement match at the back. Historically there would have been a couple of turning dials at the back to start the clock and also change the time (note the two holes in the back case) these 240v run clocks are called Synchronous Clocks (AC Mains run)

It’s impossible to tell what they replaced it with, if there no markings on the movement.

It’s an early version of a Gents clock. Maybe 1930’s ish. And was originally mains powered movement, this is noted by the voltage on the front of the dial.

Best bet if the movement is not working, replace it with another Synchronous (mains powered) Gents clock movement and hands from eBay.Or you could make it into crude quartz movement, it would have had this style hands https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134663552206?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=bYDvO8_fQJW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=qMnDhg-sTu2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I do like the copper versions. Here’s one very similar I own https://gentsofleicester.com/project/gents-of-leicester-copper-slave-wall-clock/ although this have a different movement.

Great to know where it was originally located. If you have a photo of it in situ in Debenhams that would be fanatics.

I’ll post the photos on the site when I get time. Thanks for sharing.
