Early pul-syn-etic contact maker – programmer – bell ringer

I’ve come upon an early Pul-syn-etic programmer. No serial number, just a fragment of the paper label. It was purchased a few years ago at an auction in Waterbury Connecticut. The brass dial is embossed Pul-syn-etic and “Blick Canada”. The weekend switch and wheel appear to be missing or were never included.

It also lacks a mercury duration switch and star wheel. I don’t see any holes so I assume this is the way it came from the factory.

I’m curious to understand how this contact switch in lieu of a mercury one controls the bell duration. If anyone can help I’d be grateful. I’m not a clock collector but I do have a “Self Winding Clock Co.” master clock that I would like to have drive this programmer. I would eventually like this programmer to run a set of 21 1950s solenoid driven church chimes to play songs on selected hours. (The longest is 5′ long). I could accomplish all this by programming a computer chip on an Arduino, but where’s the fun in that?

  1. Thanks for posting Jim. It is an early version indeed! Interesting that this item found its way to the states! I assume you’re still residing in the US.

Blick simply rebadged and sold these items Gents, a bit like a reseller I guess!

The contact maker I have can be run on a UK mains input (240vAC). Is there a label that suggests this is the case with your item, it maybe to the bottom right side of case? I assume the item would have been converted to work at 120vAC and 50hrz as it badged Canada!!! That’s the same voltage in Canada and the North American right?

Andy might be able to shed some light on connecting your master clock with this.if it’s achievable? If it can be powered by mains power then too don’t need the master clock.

Great use of the item to schedule church chimes. Love that!

    Kind regards
    Simon
